Timeline of Transformation

Since 2019, Skyline Queenstown has been undergoing the largest upgrade in its history. Project Skyline is unfolding across five key phases, each one building toward a world-class visitor experience at the top of Bob’s Peak.

Here’s how we’ve transformed and what’s still to come

Phase 1 (Complete)

(March 2019 – April 2023)

The groundwork for transformation began in 2019. This phase focused on preparing the terrain and infrastructure for major development.

Key milestones of Phase 1:

  • Tree removal along the Gondola corridor for safety and access
  • Rock retention to stabilise the terrain
  • Excavation for the new Base Terminal and multi-storey car park
  • Foundations laid for new 10-seat Gondola towers

Phase 2 (Complete)

(April 2023 – June 2023)

This phase marked a significant turning point in Skyline Queenstown’s history, with the transition to the new Gondola system.

Key milestones of Phase 2:

  • Skyline Queenstown was closed for 11 weeks to transition to the new Gondola system
  • Removed existing Gondola terminals and towers: Making way for the new state-of-the-art facilities
  • Constructed Base Terminal machine hall and back of house: Building the essential infrastructure to support
  • Established a temporary ticketing building at the base terminal: Ensuring a smooth customer experience during the transition
  • Constructed the top Gondola terminal building: Creating a modern and welcoming arrival point at the summit

Phase 3 (Complete)

(June 2023 – April 2024)

With the new Gondola launched in June 2023, this phase was all about completing the guest arrival experience.

Key milestones of Phase 3:

  • Base Terminal ticketing hall completed
  • Multi-storey car park finished for easier access
  • Brecon Street streetscape upgrades for improved flow and aesthetics
  • Official opening of the new Base Terminal and car park in early 2024

Phase 4 (Complete)

(August 2023 – March 2026)

This phase marks the beginning of the full redevelopment of the top complex at Bob’s Peak

Key milestones of Phase 4:

  • August 2023: Construction of a new extension begins
  • September 2025: Civil works begin to form new Luge entrance
  • March 2026: Building extension, Luge access and landscaping complete

Phase 5 (Current)

(March 2026 – Early 2029)

This phase marks the final works in the Skyline Redevelopment project.

Key milestones of Phase 5:

  • Phased demolition of the original Top Complex begins
  • 2026–2028: Rebuild and integration of new and existing sections
  • Early 2029: Full Top Complex transformation complete
